My father was an OFW. I wrote this song thinking about his sacrifices while being away from us.
Late 80s to early 90s, wala pang internet for all. Snail mail lang, voice tapes, padala sa katrabaho, balikbayan box. I was young to totally realize the hardships of being away from family.
Ngayon malayo ako sa kanila, damang-dama ko. It’s actually easier sa ngayon dahil may technology.
What I like to give him credit for is that he really did his best to be present for us no matter the distance. Consistent siya sa pagpadala ng sulat: anniversary, birthday, graduation, basta twice a month may sulat. May mga voice tapes din at pakisuyong pasalubong.
Imagine battling with homesickness on top of all the stress. Kahit nangangapa pa siya sa work dahil bago yung position. Kahit halos wala ng matira sa sweldo niya to cover for our needs. Kahit extreme heat at cold nararamdaman niya sa accomodations nila. Kahit nagkaka-away na sila ni mama while finding solutions for the family. Kahit super stressful na ang situation talagang kumapit siya.
Minsan lang kahit kapit tuko ka pa, hindi ka pinagbibigyan. Kahit magdasalin ka pa, may mga bagay na hindi para sa atin or hindi pa dapat mangyari. Sometimes we can only hope for God’s plan for us. We have to wait.
Despite all the problems never niya kami iniwan, lagi siyang umuuwi. Hindi siya na lure ng bisyo habang nasa malayo. Alam niyo ba ang theme song niya sa mama ko? Unchained melody.
(Mukhang na flex ko na si papa sa mga kanta ko. Ayos pa siya may dementia lang saka mahilig sa siopao. Mama ko naman sana iflex ko, ang hirap lang gawan ng lyrics kasi bundok din ang sakripisyo niya.. internalize ko muna din. hehe.)
